Core Industries recently offloaded one of the SS United States’ iconic forward funnels from barge to dock. The funnel was recently removed from the vessel, which remains docked at Modern American Recycling in Mobile, Ala., and transported by barge to Core Industries for long-term storage.
A second, identical funnel is currently docked on barge and is awaiting discharge at Core. Together, these six-story-tall artifacts will be preserved and showcased in the future SS United States Museum and Visitor Experience, currently being designed by the SS United States Conservancy in Okaloosa County, Florida.
The SS United States still holds the record for the fastest-ever trans-Atlantic crossing. The vessel will be sunk off the coast of Destin, Fla., where it will serve as a fishing and diving reef. Core used its Manitowoc crane to complete this job.
